Dear Congressman Young:
I am writing to inform you that you will not be receiving my vote next election, as I find your stance on Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT) to be upsetting, disappointing and offensive.

You stated in your correspondence that you do not believe the military is "the place from promoting social change." Change can occur in any aspect of a society—including the armed forces. The current military policy focuses on an individual's performance… under the assumption a solider is straight. You could have the best soldier in the military under your command, but if that soldier comes out of the closet, his or her performance doesn't matter because the soldier is swiftly discharged.

Also, a soldier's sexual orientation should never have bearing on the success or failure of a mission. If the military issued a statement saying, "The mission failed because Private Jones is black / Jewish / female / et cetera," there would be public outrage at home and abroad; I see no reason for it to be acceptable to say, "The mission failed because Private Jones is gay." This is a double standard that is simply unacceptable in the armed forces of a country that prides itself on its tolerance of other human beings.

This policy is the polar opposite of nondiscrimination—it sends a message to our soldiers that says, "You can die for your country… but only if you're straight."

I hope that you will consider these points, as well as the words of other constituents who share my views, before you vote on H.R. 5136.

Thank you for your time.
My letter to my Congressman [Representative] Don Young (Republican, AK).

Quite self explanatory; my views are all laid out above. And no, I have no intention of voting for him.

Yeah you tell him.

I so agree you here. Don't Ask, Don't Tell is so stupid.

Ooh and here's a fun fact: Back in Ancient Greece, homosexuality was once encouraged among soldiers, because it was believed that they would get more fight out of a soldier if he was fighting for his lover.
